Honoring Service Through Expression
Houston is a city rich in culture, creativity, and community, and at the intersection of all three, you’ll find a growing and inspiring movement: veterans in the arts. Whether it's music, painting, film, writing, or performance, many local veterans are using creative expression as a powerful tool for healing, connection, and storytelling.
At the Veteran Services Department, we believe that artistic pursuits aren’t just hobbies; they are essential avenues for veterans to process experiences, rediscover purpose, and build bridges with civilian communities. Here’s a look at how veterans are making their mark on the Houston arts scene, and how you can support or get involved.
🎭 Veterans on Stage and Screen
1. The Telling Project – Houston Chapter
This national initiative partners with local veterans to produce live theatrical performances based on their real-life stories. Houston has hosted several powerful showcases, with veterans performing their own narratives on stage, a form of both public education and personal catharsis.
2. Film Lab Houston & Veteran Storytelling Workshops
Veterans with an interest in filmmaking, screenwriting, or documentary storytelling can find mentorship and collaboration opportunities through local film labs. Past projects have included short films and web series centered on life during and after military service.
🎨 Veteran Visual Artists and Exhibits
3. Combat Paper Project – Texas Edition
This traveling art initiative invites veterans to transform old uniforms into handmade paper, which then becomes the medium for prints, poetry, and painting. Local galleries like Project Row Houses and the Art League Houston have hosted veteran-focused exhibitions in recent years.
4. Veterans’ Art Exhibit at The Silos at Sawyer Yards
One of Houston’s largest artist communities regularly features veteran artists who specialize in photography, sculpture, and mixed media. Look out for pop-up shows throughout the year where veteran creators showcase their powerful perspectives.
🎶 Music, Poetry & Performance
5. Warrior Writers – Houston Chapter
This national network has a presence in Houston, hosting regular workshops for veterans to write, share, and publish poetry, memoirs, and creative nonfiction. It’s a safe, empowering environment for those finding their voice.
🖌️ How to Get Involved
Veterans: Want to share your art, explore a new medium, or connect with fellow creatives? The internet is your best avenue to finding in-person meetings to create your circle. Social media platforms such as Facebook groups and Reddit are also great ways to showcase your work and surround yourself with like-minded individuals.
Civilians & Supporters: Attend veteran art shows, buy veteran-made art, or donate to organizations offering creative therapy and arts training to veterans.
Organizations & Artists: Partner with local VSOs to host collaborative events or residencies for veterans in your space.
🧠 Art as Healing
Many veterans face challenges with PTSD, anxiety, or reintegration stress. Creative expression has proven therapeutic benefits, offering safe outlets to explore emotions, rebuild identity, and foster resilience. Several Houston-area VA hospitals and clinics now offer art therapy as part of their behavioral health programs.
Final Thoughts
“I give you all this info because of what the arts have done for me personally. After serving as an infantryman, I struggled to find a purpose. Growing up, I played in bands as a guitar player, so I was musically inclined but couldn’t read a lick of it, so college was out of the question for me. In the soul search, I found that expression is everything for me, and how I do that is important to how MY story was told. So, I did what anyone would do with a love for storytelling…
I went to school for film.
This has helped me analyze and put into words what happened to me out there in foreign lands. Things I didn't think I would be able to put into words. It’s helped my mental health, my marriage, and most of all my confidence in myself as an artist and creator. The arts are EVERYTHING to me, and I believe there is a place for everyone.
Learn an instrument (I play several)
Join an acting class (I can recommend one)
Write a poem
Shoot a film (I’d love to help!)
Tell YOUR story!”
