On this Father’s Day, we take a moment to salute not just the fathers who raised us, but those who also raised their right hands in service to our nation.

June 14th is Flag Day, a day set aside to honor the adoption of the American flag in 1777. For most Americans, it’s a patriotic observance. But for those who have worn the uniform and for the families who stood behind them, the flag holds a deeper, more personal meaning. It’s not just a symbol of the nation; it’s a reminder of service, sacrifice, and shared purpose.

You trained hard in uniform, and physical fitness was a daily expectation. But after military life, staying in shape isn’t just about hitting a certain standard. It’s about preserving your health, finding community, and maintaining purpose.

For Houston-area veterans, fitness can be a powerful tool for physical and emotional strength. Whether you’re trying to stay sharp, reduce chronic pain, or deal with stress and anxiety, movement matters, and you don’t have to do it alone.

Each year, Memorial Day offers us a moment of reflection. A solemn reminder of the brave men and women who laid down their lives in service to our nation. For veterans and their families, the meaning of this day runs deeper than ceremonies and speeches. It is personal. It is sacred.

It’s Mother’s Day, and we celebrate the strength, love, and resilience of mothers everywhere, but today, we want to honor our military mothers.

Veterans, servicemembers who are mothers… but also our spouses and parents who have stuck around to tend to our homefront and precious families. 

To the military mothers who show up every day for their families, their communities, and their fellow veterans. This day is for you.

Veterans in Texas have significant benefits to enjoy national and state parks, let’s go outdoors! 

Whether fishing, hunting, photographing or spending time with family, Texas has much to offer in our diverse ecosystems across the state. In this specific case, Texas has mountain vistas, rivers and streams, sunny sandy beaches, and intwined trails throughout the state.

HOUSTON (Sept. 10, 2024) The Harris County Veteran Services Department (HC VSD) proudly supports efforts by the office of Houston City Council District C (Council Member Abbie Kamin) in providing secure firearm storage options. 

Texas property taxes are high, but VA-rated disabled vets (DVs) may receive a discount on the taxes property taxes they may. Some DVs can even get their property taxes completely waived.

Texas DV (Disabled Veteran) License Plates, or “tags” are a super power.

Okay… Maybe not like a comic superhero power, but legally you get to do far more things than the regular driver, which is pretty useful since you drive everywhere in Houston.

Today we’d like to share some memories and old images of the VSD staff who proudly work to help veterans re-integrate into the civilian society after serving our nation.

Beginning September 15, 2023, Houston Airports will offer certain military veterans and military award recipients complimentary parking each time they visit George Bush Intercontinental Airport or William P. Hobby Airport. 

Qualifying veterans can choose between:

Up to 60 consecutive days in an ecopark lot or

Up to 5 consecutive days in a parking garage 

The Harris County Veterans Services Deparment (the VSD) received a $750,000 grant from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to support local Veterans through the Staff Sergeant Parker Gordon Fox Suicide Prevention Grant Program (SSG Fox SPGP)

You served. Now you can get schooling, land your dream job, and get paid the entire time.

Too good to be true? Well, the VA has set aside $386 million to pay for as many as 17,250 veterans to get into a huge list of key jobs that America needs.

Here’s the kicker: the deadline is in December, 2022.

We are talking about the Veteran Rapid Retraining Assistance Program (VRRAP).
